As we reported way back in February when our very own Kim Reynolds drove a prototype of Honda's FCX Concept, Honda announced at a press event yesterday that it will have production versions of the hydrogen-powered sedan ready in 2008 for U.S. and Japanese customers.
Honda's prediction is that the 2008 FCX will see fuel mileage of around 68 mpg in combined highway and city driving, with a range of 270 miles and a top speed of 100 mph. While hydrogen fuel is currently more expensive than gasoline (perhaps a dollar or two more per gallon), increased fuel mileage would outweigh the higher cost. During our FCX drive, we estimated acceleration times of 9.0 seconds from 0-60 mph - not bad from 127 electric horsepower.
