Get inside a car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, turn on the ignition and the first thing you hear is a quiet hum. There's no engine noise, just that hum.
As the pressure in the cell increases, the hum gets a bit louder. But not a lot. You can easily talk over it. There's something about it that's reminiscent of the hum you hear in airplanes.
But press the accelerator -- which drives more hydrogen gas into the fuel cell and makes the car go -- and the response is instantaneous. Much better than in a conventional gasoline-powered car. And there's no roar either -- just that faint hum.
