Ways of deriving hydrogen as a fuel is becoming a priority for carmakers, according to an article in Germany's Financial Times.

Aside from hydrogen, alternatives to the electric car are being explored, including work by Italian company Acta on the use of ammonia in vehicles.

Following on from the the successful publicity attracted by the Honda FCX Clarity at the Los Angeles auto show, more attention is being paid to alternative ways of deriving hydrogen.

Hydrogen is less flammable and explosive than gasoline. A fire or explosion is highly unlikely because hydrogen dissipates quickly and would not maintain the concentration necessary for ignition in the open air. As a fuel it burns cleaner than gasoline with no carbon emissions, which makes it safe from a pollution standpoint as well.
